What is Email Marketing?

Email marketing is the process of sending commercial emails to a group of people to build business relationships. These people are your existing or potential customers who can help broaden your brand.

Emails can be in the form of advertisements, business requests or donations, with the objective of building loyalty, trust and brand awareness.

Why are Email Marketing skills important?

Email marketing has a return of investment (ROI) of $36 for every $1 spent, which means that if you spend $1, you’ll get $35 back. In 2019, there were 3.9 billion email users in the world. This number is expected to grow to 4.48 billion by 2024. That’s half the world’s population!

It has been seen that 72% of US consumers prefer email marketing over other types of promotion. A recent study by Litmus shows that consumers project email marketing to be the most relevant marketing channel in the next 10 years.

According to the US Burning Glass Labor Insight Report, 86% of business leaders report that digital commerce will be the most important route to growth. There are 218,000 U.S. job openings in this growing field, with a median entry-level salary of $51,000.

What is my experience with Email Marketing?

As a Generalist at Class Central, a large part of my job is to send emails to instructors to inform them of our BCGs. If it clicks, we get to form stronger bonds with them, which potentially increases our reach to more learners.

My colleague, @Pat, also sends emails to learners who might want to write reviews for The Report. She successfully encourages them, and we have published many review articles as a result. We also send monthly newsletters to our subscribers to increase brand awareness, showcase most popular topics, and advertise new products and services.

Besides that, I am a Guided Project Instructor and a Beta Tester at Coursera, having tested many courses before they’re officially launched. I have taken over 50 online courses in various subjects.

My experience as an online learner and teacher has given me some perspective on what to look for in an online course. I used my experience to evaluate each course in this list.

Course Ranking Methodology

I built this ranking following the now tried-and-tested methodology I used in previous rankings (you can find them all here). It involves a three-step process:

  1. Research: I started by leveraging Class Central’s database with 100K online courses and 200K+ reviews. Then, I made a preliminary selection of 100+ email marketing courses by rating, reviews, and bookmarks.
  2. Evaluate: I read through reviews on Class Central, Reddit, and course providers to understand what other learners thought about each course and combined it with my own experience as a learner.
  3. Select: Well-made courses were picked if they presented valuable and engaging content and they have to fit in a set of criteria and be ranked accordingly: comprehensive curriculum, release date, affordability, ratings and enrollments.

The end result is a unique selection of courses that combines a decade of Class Central data and my own experience as an online learner to try to get the best of both worlds. So far, I’ve spent more than 12 hours building this list, and I’ll continue to update it.

Course Ranking Statistics

Here are some statistics regarding this course ranking:
